1. Are you kidding me ! The I , In IEP is Individual.

    Our daughter has gone thru the school system in regular classes has a friend since 6th grade and is now 20 and just went to the movies with her by thier selfs .Has a regents diploma, yes a real diploma that means something. Holds a job for the last three years and volunteers once a week at a used clothing store for a hospital for five years.
    Can spell at a 12 grade level and handwritting that is better than most adults.
    We are very grateful for the team that has helped us with the journey.And thank you very much she isn’t normal and she didnt get better ,but she sure is giving back to the community with a smile. And Yes I am a Advocate and yes Our daughter is born with Down Syndrome And YES we are proud of all the hard work she has put in to who she is today .

    Special education is a service not a placement, you may put the services to meet the needs of the child.

    I am very sorry to hear that you are extremely frustrated or should I say stubborn to the IDEA of so called mainstreamed (inclusion).

  2. Diversity and Accessibility is destroying education. I am not talking about racial diversity or economic diversity or inclusion of physically disabled students. (Than’s good) I’m talking about putting gifted students, mentally challenged students, and normal students together in the same classroom. In the name of inclusion, you are holding back gifted students, overwheliming the mentally challenged, and boring the heck out of both. You are expecting teachers to teach students of such different abilities in the same classroom that noone is well served. I am the parent of a child with down syndrome who spent her entire school experiance in special ed classes, and she did very well. Friends who were mainstreamed were extreamly frustrated. IEP’s in schools should give the option of special ed schools, and gifted classes, for students who need them. I have talked to teachers who say they spend all their time dealing with behavior problems rather than teaching. We have to accept that everyone is not the same, and putting children with extreem differences in ability and behavior in the same classes is helping noone. I know this is politically incorrect to say, but from a parent who has been there, I know that mentally challenged children do not become “normal” or “get better” by sitting in a normal classroom that they cannot possibly understand. Students can interact in the community, or in social activities in school, but not in the classroom. Advocates need to get their heads out of the sand and accept the truth. We are hurting everyone.
