New Grad Rate Data Show Gap Between Minority and White Students is Closing

New data out today show some positive signs in ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed, no matter their zip code.

Between 2010-11 and 2012-13, the graduation rates for American Indian, black, and Hispanic students increased by nearly four percentage points over two years, outpacing the growth for all students. This also shows that the gap between minority and white students is closing.

This exciting news is one more piece of evidence that America’s public schools are making important progress. America’s high school graduation rate is at a record high, dropout rates are down, and 1.1 million additional black and Hispanic students are attending college since 2008.

We still have work to do in improving educational opportunities for every student, but we are seeing incredible progress, and the credit for this progress goes to America’s educators, families, communities, and students. All of whom are working through major and sometimes challenging changes in our schools.

  1. As a District Attendance Officer and At-Risk Coordinator, the emphasis of late is on making sure students come to school, stay in school, and graduate. Schools need to continue to be proactive in finding dropouts at the beginning of each school year and convincing them to come back to school in order to graduate. Most states have built in accountability ratings that hinge on graduation rates so districts have been more cognizant of the importance of having every student that enters high school graduate on a timely basis.

  2. Can you provide the before data and comparison to what is being suggested? What sources did your data come from which validates this. The disproportionate discipline across America remains the same and stating 4% of education gaps is representation of all America schools especially Minorities graduation rates and SPED is absurd….. This is contextual blindness. The current rates are disproportionately staggering especially with majority of minorities have not graduated and found themselves with felonies or imprisioned. The data from prison show something totally different. Thank you so much…. Respectfully submitted.
