A Message from the Secretary of Education to ITT Students

Dear ITT student,

Today, ITT Educational Services, Inc. (ITT) announced that it is closing all of its ITT Technical Institute campuses. For most of the world, that news will be covered as a business story or a political one, but I know that for you it is deeply personal. You are probably wondering what this means for your future; how it is going to affect your finances and your ability to continue your education.

In recent years, ITT has increasingly been the subject of numerous state and federal investigations. In August, ITT’s accreditor, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) determined that ITT “is not in compliance, and is unlikely to become in compliance with [ACICS] Accreditation Criteria.” This came amid increasingly heightened financial oversight measures put in place by the Department over the past two years due to significant concerns about ITT’s administrative capacity, organizational integrity, financial viability, and ability to serve students.

The school’s decisions have put its students and millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded federal student aid at risk. Last week, the Department of Education took oversight actions to prevent ITT from continuing to add to that risk. When we made that decision, we did not take it lightly. One possible outcome of oversight actions is that a school may choose to close rather than take corrective actions, which can cause disruption and disappointment for current students. Ultimately, we made a difficult choice to pursue additional oversight in order to protect you, other students, and taxpayers from potentially worse educational and financial damage in the future if ITT was allowed to continue operating without increased oversight and assurances to better serve students.

We are committed to helping you as you consider next steps. Most immediately, you have two basic options to choose between:

  1. If you are currently or were recently enrolled at ITT, you may be eligible to have your federal student loans for your program at ITT discharged. Your federal loan debt will be wiped away and you will have the option of restarting your education somewhere new. We will post and update information about how to receive a discharge at our ITT announcements page.
  2. If you wish to continue and complete your program at a different school – especially if you are close to graduating – you may be able to transfer your credits. It is important to note that transferring your credits may limit your ability to have your federal loans discharged. Closed school discharge may be an option if you enroll in a different program that does not accept your ITT credits.

Both of these options have pros and cons, depending on your unique circumstances, so it is important that you consider your specific situation carefully. You can find some information to start with at our ITT announcements page. The Department’s Office of Federal Student Aid is ready to support you with resources and information, including through this website, and will be updating you with more information in the coming days and weeks.

Whatever you choose to do, do not give up on your education. Higher education remains the clearest path to economic opportunity and security. Restarting or continuing your education at a high-quality, reputable institution may feel like a setback today, but odds are it will pay off in the long run. There are people and tools – like our College Scorecard – out there to help you pick a program that gives you a real shot at success.

I am proud of your hard work and dedication, and we will do all we can to continue to provide information to you on your options.

Sincerely,

John B. King Jr., U.S. Secretary of Education

  1. I have came a long way and I had 3 more months to go before I finish my nursing degree. I attended ITT Tech in Tallassee FL. I think that we should have the option to take NCLEX we have come to far. please respond.

  2. I graduate tomorrow 9.7.16, And my itt tech is saying I still have a graduation ceramony.. Ill collect my “diploma” if that’s what you want to call it . But what is this piece of paper even worth . I’ve just wasted thousands of dollars aswell as hundreds of hours on this degree. Where do I stand? I demand federal loan discharge. Pell grant reimbursement?

  3. I Just graduated in from ITT in January from the school and now I have just started to pay back my federal loans. Is there any way that I can get all this money of student loans discharged. Just because I have completed this program now I have to pay a large sum of debt from a school that was dishonest to its students. It just feels unjust. These poor students now that have been taken advantage of and I feel a heavy heart for them.

  4. I have a friend who is supposed to graduate in 2 weeks, he’s done with all his classes does he recieve his degree or no?

  5. It says we have an option to transfer credits but that is completely false in mobile al we have had approx 60 students just working on other institutions begging them to accept our credits No one will. We are all 20 weeks away from completion. We’ve worked hard lost family time, finances and grained a lot of stress and for this we get what? The ability to reimburse the government back their loans. What a compassionate world we live in.

  6. I graduated September 2015 with my Bacholers in Project Mamagement. My student loans are starting to pile up. I have filed for loan forgiveness on my federal loans and now pay a small amount based on income….. unfortunatly I have a private loan with ITT Tech for $8,000. Do either of my loans qualify for dismissal? My degree now has been devalued due to the recent closings. Please let me know where I can turn to to see if I qualify.

  7. My name is chris arian and i graduated itt have 60000 in student loans they told me people would be begging me for work then when I couldn’t find work in 2008 i was yelled at and told it was my fault. Since I was out of work my loans went into default and ruined my credit. For which im still suffering from. Now that itt has closed and is accused of what I’ve been saying for years is there help for me.

  8. I hope that my daughter can get her nursing diploma this year, she has finished the nursing curriculum and deserves to graduate from this program from a school in which you the Dept of Education ok’d, if not I’m sure you will appreciate the CLASS ACTION LAW SUITE we and a number of other students and parents will bring down on you faster than you can shake a stick, we do not accept your answer to the kids to waste 4 years of their lives just to start over again, you will take care of these kids because it is the right thing to do, if the government knows right from wrong which is questionable.

  9. I am very ashamed of you to call yourselves the Department of Education when you are letting thousands of students you put a lot of time and hard work into their classes just for you to tell them when they are 3 months away from graduating that their time was wasted and not worth anything. If you cared for the students as much as you do the green money you would come up with a better way for this to end. It just shows that everyone in government is in it for the ole mighty dollar and don’t care about who it effects or how. Thanks a lot DOE………

  10. Hi I graduated as of September 5, 2016, I am wondering if I will be getting my degree or not and if I do will it hold its own weight or should i try to get my money back and spend another 2 years to get the same degree?

  11. I am very disappointed that this closure has happened.
I was looking forward to graduation with a Bachelors degree in Software Development next year ( June 2016). I currently hold an Associates degree in Software Development.
I received the best education at ITT-Tech. I have been to many schools but ITT-Tech has a superior program; the quality of the education combined with the hands on training that I received in the labs were better than many of the schools that I attended in the past.
Why couldn’t this closure have been phased in rather than the sudden cut?
I know of many students who graduated from ITT-Tech and have found jobs in the field in which they majored.

  12. My son just finished his work for associates degree. He was due to graduate and receive, what I feel is a worthless degree, in computer and electrical engineering in Sept 27. Two years of straight school, no vacations. $48,000 in debt and not sure he will get anything out of it. What is his best option?

  13. I just used up all of my GI Bill to finish my bachelor’s. Literally 2 semesters away, The VA will not compensate for the lost time and benefits wasted. I’m not getting my BAH or loans I was depending upon to basically live. Veterans do not have the same options as a regular student. I cannot get my loans dismissed. I cannot go to another school that will accept my credits, I looked and nothong is available in my area/ state. I went to war to be able to go to school, to provide a better future for my family, so they can go to college and be successful in life. Now tell me what im supposed to do. I have no income, No GI Bill left. Cannot just say oh well the last 4 years of working hard 3.93 GPA, straight A’s was FUN!! I can’t get my time or benefits back! So being a veteran doesn’t count for nothing in this case. I risked my life for nothing, no degree and no job. I’ll start job hunting tomorrow. I don’t have the passion or drive to go back to school for another 4 years, start all over… gotta be crazy!

  14. This so very unfair the sad thing about was you this was going to happen in June or July 2016. You waited until we were on break to spring this on us. Me and classmates were do to graduate December 2016. You people messed us up. You wanna blame the government I blame ITT Tech for this nightmare drama mess

  15. Hello,
My name is Ivan and I joined ITT tech in 2012 with dreams of a better and financial stable life within 6 months I wanted to drop out but every time they would insist that it was the rough path I had to go thru before I could achieve my goals, I am basically 35k in debt to just learn how to make a drawing on autocad, seriously I can’t find a decent job with the associates degree no where, interviewers have even told me ITT tech tittle hold no value and I have tried to get my loan discharged with no luck maybe this is the light me and thousands of other people need to get out of this scam

  16. I know this may sound selfish. But what are you doing for those of us who have served in the military and have wasted our benefits at ITT?

  17. I graduated from my ITT in Cordova,Tn in 2012 and I used my GI Bill to pay for school but when I graduated and applied for jobs they told me that they ITT is not an accredited school so I’m stuck with an degree that I can’t use

  18. Mr. King, When will you be shutting down Laureate International University? Please act before more students and and tax payers are harmed.

  19. I too would like to know what favorable impact this will have with prior students. I myself tried to transfer my Bachelors credit to another college. When they advised me that the ITT units were not accredited and would not be considered was beside myself. I spent 4 years getting into student loan debt for an education that meant nothing outside of that school. Please consider forgiving loans of ALL students that were victims of ITT Tech.

  20. What about graduates from past years? I graduated in 2012 and I am struggling to pay back these loans. Please tell me these loans will be discharged/forgiven? I was cheated a good education and was lied to.

  21. How is any of this protecting the current students? Simply, it is not. The two options that are being given to the students are not real options. I was supposed to graduate this December. Now, I am left with credits that will not transfer & a wasted 3 years of my life. Yes, this is very personal for me. Yes, my life has been ruined.
You are proud of us for perusing a higher education, yet you really have done nothing to protect us from losing all of that hard work.
Shame on the US Department of Education for not considering current students.
Yes, ITT was at fault, but no one seems to care about the people who have already invested years of their lives to better themselves only to have it ALL taken away. ITT students have been thrown to the wolves. Great job on “protecting” us.

  22. Don’t give up. Help is on the way. I am three weeks from being 67 years old. This was my first time in college, and I just finished my first quarter. Devastated I decided to enroll in a school that accepted the credits. I am determined to try to finish.. Cancer survivor, polio survivor, 36 surgeries, three bone transplants, ostemyolitis, etc. Keep praying and keep going.

  23. I’m a veteran that ussed my hard earn benefits to go to school and better myself and now i have a worthless degree and all my benefits gone that i won’t get back to use to go in to another school. Will there be any help for the veterans that lost their benefits to this frauds of ITT Tech, how can we recouparate our benefits in order to continue education somewhere else?

  24. Well i had to drop in december of 2015 and i re enrolled early august 2016 and all i was waiting for was a schedule to start sept. 12 again. but then found out it was shut down. what can i do?

  25. I want to know how to get my federal loans forgiven! I am currently disabled and have no income.

  26. What about us with an Itt Degree, is it now worthless? Will it still be valid or even recognized by Major Corporations out here? Or are we just paying $50k in federal student loans for a sheet of paper? I personally believe that we should also be discharged of our loans and also given the opportunity to restart our education else where. We too need a fresh start!

  27. I’m suppose to graduate this Oct. 6, 2016 and i just want to know if im going to walk the stage to get my degree for ISC Bachelors and pay loans and im scared and stressed out all those 4 years for nothing and im shocked..

  28. I was currently a student until today. After reading all the comments from everyone, we all are wanting some resolution….this is really a shame and discouraging for people taking an opportunity to better themselves and not for our country not to have a tighter watch on education institutions to make sure things like this don’t happen.
The sacrifice most make to make a difference not only for themselves, but for their families. For some this is robbing potential income from those just getting to graduate and have nothing in black and white for the efforts or self accomplishment.

  29. My hasband just finished last week of school last week. My husband is suppose to graduate this sep 29 for Bat for information seciuity. Will the graduation still take place or atleast the deploma sent to him?

  30. My question is not about the student loans mine was paid for by the GI bill. I was one class away from graduating. Since the GI was paid directly to tuition and is not considered debt how would I recover that cost in the event I would have to start over?

  31. I graduated from ITT Technical Institute in Myrtle Beach in 2013. I have been paying $600 per month for my student loan and the parent plus loan my dad took on my behalf. I’ve also been living with my dad since I started ITT Tech. After graduating, it took nearly two years to find a job in my field. Even with my current job, my student loans make it impossible for me to live independently.

  32. This needs to apply to all of us that went years ago!! We are all struggling SO MUCH for a garbage piece of paper!! We were all duped. I do NOT care about being re-paid what I’ve already paid, just forgive what I still have left! It’s IMAGINARY MONEY!

  33. Are there any efforts to assist former students that are deep in debt due to the practices of ITT, including dismissal of debts?

  34. MR.king I’m an Itt student I had still 3 months to go to graduate on December I moved from Georgia to Miami to get an education so my mom could help me with my 6 year old and now after 21/2 years I have nothing again! You happened to think about all the students that made a great effort to go school day after day to have a degree and because of money we can’t obtain that! It’s just sucks! Thank you for nothing

  35. i only had one semester left and am looking for information on what is happening with itt closing is there a number i can call or someone to talk to about this.

  36. I too need to know about debt forgiveness. Not only did I join when I was 17 , but there was serious issues including our entire class walking out and forcing the director to get a new teacher which they did…. They then let us graduate that class based on a single paper , pass or fail… Some education!

No I am 10’s of thousands of dollars in debt and have a minimum of 400$ to pay each month whil struggling in Silicon Valley with extremely high rent. If only we can save enough to move.

ITT was a huge scam unfortunately and I was taken 🙁

  37. Mr. King, am I able to finish the medical assist/admin program this coming quarter due to start September 12, 2016? I have just one class and an extern ship left. Will these be paid for by financial student aid and the scholarship that has been in place through ITT Tech from the beginning? How will this affect my financial status?

  38. My last day was September 3, 2016 and my graduation date was supposed to be October 6th. Although I understand it’s unlikely there will be a graduation ceremony, will I still be receiving my degree? Not one email that I have received so far has mentioned students who finished their program and are set to receive their degree. I was in the Criminal Justice program at the Levittown, PA location.

  39. I just finished my last class in ITT Tech last semster, am I still getting my degree? Any information will be helpful.

  40. I graduated over a decade ago and am paying $70,000 on federal loans From this fraud of a school. To be honest i don’t even tell people i went to this school and even pulled it off my LinkedIn acct. The degree was never worth the paper they are written on. Where can I apply for the “close school discharge?”

  41. I have been using my Post 9-11 bill, will I be able to get this back to start at a new institution? Or will I be out of luck.

  42. I graduated in 1999 now my degree is worthless; I paid off loan last year. Are Alumni going to be compensated what do I put on my resume now?

This should have happened decades ago.

  43. How about veterans what are we suppose to do we don’t use loans the VA or GI Bill pays for our schooling so we are out of luck now. We can’t get back those months used? What is your fix for Veterans? Explain the fix………
